Crandall Public Library Engages in Sustainable Libraries Certification Program

In the spring of 2024, Crandall Public Library Trustees approved whole-library engagement in the American Library Association’s (ALA) Sustainable Libraries Initiative. Sustainability is a core value of the ALA. Embracing the program ensures that our community will prosper in many ways as we navigate an ever evolving climatological, regulatory and social milieu. The Library will be making programmatic choices that will demonstrate that we are a strong, resilient, and authentic institution in terms of responsible operations; namely, the Library will be a catalyst for social cohesion in the region and a model of best practices for our community within our own ecosystem.

On October 16, 2024, the Adirondack Region Chamber of Commerce hosted a Ribbon Cutting event, where the Library publicly declared its commitment to sustainability. As an organization, our staff, administration, and board have teamed up to complete the Sustainable Libraries Certification Program, which is designed to guide our actions towards an environmentally sound, economically feasible, and socially equitable future by implementation of these parameters: organizational commitment; energy, water, and waste management; materials and recycling; partnerships; community involvement; social equity; community resiliency; and, financial sustainability.
